Guided hike as part of the Bergische Wanderwochen (Bergisch Hiking Weeks)

We enter an extraordinary waste disposal site that has been transformed into an active landfill with innovative environmental technologies, a research site, an extracurricular learning center, and a recreational area all in one. A slide presentation and a subsequent guided tour of the architecturally interesting site will explain how this system of diverse uses functions. I will explain how the material transformation process in the landfill takes place from ecological and soil science perspectives – in keeping with the Greek term "metabolon." We will hike up the 110-meter-high landfill cone, from which you can see the different functional areas of the landfill and enjoy a panoramic view of the Bergisches Land region. Take advantage of the opportunity to slide down the cone on a double slide, which is 200 meters long. Finally, you will be guided through a labyrinth of man-high grass, a Japanese grass variety planted here that develops stalks up to 3 meters high in summer. You are welcome to find your way out of the grassy jungle through the labyrinth. After the tour, you can refresh yourself with coffee and cake in the bistro of the Bergisches Energiekompetenzzentrum.
