Lindlar is rich in stone, even if the people here have never earned more than elsewhere. However, its greywacke quarries, where Bergische greywacke has been extracted for almost 1000 years, are truly rich in stone. As a building material and in geology, it is more in demand than ever and world-renowned. 390 million years ago, when the Bergisches Land region was still located near the equator on the shore of a typical shallow sea, the greywacke was formed by sand deposits and high pressure. In 2008, a fossil was discovered which, according to geological research, revealed the "oldest forest in the world" to be located here. The Stonemason's Trail leads from the center of Lindlar up around the three still-operating quarries in Brungerst. Along the way, you can discover historical buildings and monuments that attest to the craftsmanship of Lindlar's stonemasons. A visit to the Lindlar Greywacke Museum is planned as a short detour. In Brungerst, the trail offers adventurous insights into abandoned quarries from centuries past. They served as a film set for "The Hunger Games" in late summer 2025. The guided tour highlights the local history, enriched with entertaining anecdotes. Along the way, we experience a small surprise.
