In the Altenberg Monastery Landscape, a site awarded the European Heritage Label, several large, former gunpowder production facilities lie between the Große Dhünn Dam and the Schöllerhof hiking parking area. The remarkable remains of the water-powered structures, gunpowder mills, roller mills, embankments, bunkers, and residential buildings are explained using historical maps, blueprints, and photographs. The focus is on the history of the Aue and Helenenthal gunpowder factories.

The LuGeV powder mill excursion is not wheelchair accessible and requires good physical condition; it is 6 km long, and participants should wear sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and bring their own food and drinks. Please register by email.
