Cycling in the Bergisches Land
Cycling in the Bergisches Land
The Bergisches Land is simply ideal for cycling. Despite what the name suggests, the Bergisch region not only offers sporty and demanding cycle trails but also numerous comfortable tours with only slight ascents, suitable for pleasure cyclists and families.
In general, the region to the west in the direction of Cologne offers more flat cycling tours than the ever hillier landscape to the east.
Several former railway lines and beautiful riverside cycle trails invite you to go on a extended tour with only very slight inclines. At various points, you have the option of beginning, ending or cutting your tour short by taking the train or the “Bergische FahrradBus” (Bergisch bicycle bus).
Ambitious racing cyclists can enjoy the Bergisch landscape on long routes or train for their next race. The many winding roads that run through the hilly landscape far from the main traffic routes are ideal for this. Mountain bikers can really get their money’s worth in the forests or at ":metabolon" bike park.
Anyone who would prefer the support of an e-bike on their tour of the Bergisch region will find various rental opportunities and charging stations along the way, so that even longer tours are possible without any problem. E-bikes make the mountains flat!
On these pages, you will find a great many tour tips, information on service offers regarding bicycles and e-bikes, the “Bergische FahrradBus” and information on guided cycle tours, event tips etc.
Travelling along disused railway lines
The "Bergische Panorama-Radweg” (Bergisch Panorama Cycle Trail) and the "Panorama-Radweg Balkantrasse" (Balkantrasse Panorama Cycle Trail) offer two attractive tours along the former railway lines through the Bergisch region. Cycling without too much effort is possible here. Bridges, tunnels, old train stations - you really get the feeling that you are on the trail of old railway lines in many places here. Longer stretches can be covered with ease by using the regional train or the Bergische FahrradBus (Bergisch bicycle bus) for parts of your tour.
You will find cycle tours to meet all requirements - sporty or comfortable, for young lovers or families, racing cyclists or mountain bikers. Or entirely individualised planning using the junction point system.
We won’t leave you on your own. In the Bergisch region, there are many service stations that are happy to support you. For your e-bike tour, you can simply hire an e-bike and charge it as required along the way at the different charging stations. Touring bicycles can also be hired here. If there is a problem with the bike, there are also repair workshops for cyclists in the Bergisch region.
Nature offer numerous opportunities to actively recharge your batteries. Please play your part in protecting the environment and conserving the natural surroundings for both people and wildlife with consideration and respect:
- Do not leave the signposted routes and behave calmly, especially in nature conservation areas.
- Please have consideration for others nature users, especially pedestrians on the shared trails.
- Take your rubbish home with you.
From March to end of October, the Bergische FahrradBus between Leverkusen-Opladen and Marienheide runs along the Panorama Cycle Trails at weekends and on holidays. Plan your cycle tour on the Balkantrasse and the Bergisch Panorama Cycle Trails and use the FahrradBus for the way back.
In the Bergisches Land, there is so much to discover, much of which you might not even notice. Book a guided cycle tour and experience the region from the saddle in a group with an expert guide. Whether a comfortable family tour or a sporty and demanding mountain bike tour with technical instructions - it’s often more fun in a group.
The Bergisch region is not the only place where the cycling is good. Throughout Radregion Rheinland, you will find fantastic tours to meet every requirement - from a themed cycle tour to an idyllic riverside cycle tour, a sporty racing bike tour to technically demanding mountain bike routes.
Every two years, a big cycling festival takes place along the Bergisch railway line cycle trails. Celebrate the Bergisch Trassentreffen (railway line meet) with us and cycle, run, skate or walk along the Panorama-Radweg Balkantrasse (Balkantrasse Panorama Cycle Trail), the Bergische Panorama-Radweg (Bergisch Panorama Cycle Trail), Raderoute Wasserquintett (Water Quintet Cycle Trail) or the Bergisch Railway Line Trio loop Trails.
