Altenberg Cathedral

Church

The cathedral is one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Germany and a landmark of the Bergisches Land region.
Nestled amidst forests and meadows, it rises abruptly from the Dhünn valley. Such secluded river valleys were among the preferred building sites of the Cistercian monks who came to Altenberg from France in 1133 to found a new monastery.

Of particular art historical significance are the Madonna in a halo of rays and the tabernacle. The large west window deserves special attention: depicting the Heavenly Jerusalem, it is, at 144 square meters, the largest church window north of the Alps. Numerous tombs and gravestones of secular and ecclesiastical princes inside the church also bear witness to the long history of the monastery, the dukes, and the counts of the Bergish noble family.

Those wishing to discover the cathedral and its history under "professional" guidance should join a guided tour. Public tours take place between March and the end of October on the first and third Saturday of each month at 11:00 a.m. The meeting point is the cathedral's main entrance; registration is not required.
