Berge Castle

Berge Castle was the first ancestral seat of the Counts of Berg and is the cradle of the Bergisches Land region.
The remains, located on a steep hillside on the banks of the Dhünn River, are now protected as an archaeological monument.
Berge Castle was probably built around the year 1060. Adolf I, who was later made Count, adopted the epithet "de Berge" from 1080 onwards, which was Latinized to "de monte" from 1090. In 1133, the Counts of Berg moved to their newly built, more prestigious castle "Neuenberge" – from 1485 onwards, Burg Castle on the Wupper River.

After the counts moved into the new castle, the old Berge Castle served as a settlement for Cistercian monks for a short time. The monks then built Altenberg Abbey in the valley, about 500 meters from the castle.
Today, only a few remnants of the castle remain, barely visible and overgrown. These consist of old rubble stone walls that once enclosed the base of the main residential building. Over the centuries, nature has increasingly reclaimed the site.

Thanks to the long-standing work of the association Landschaft und Geschichte eV and the Verschönerungs- und Kulturverein Altenberg, interest in the castle and the Counts of Berg has been revived. The association Landschaft und Geschichte eV offers guided tours of the grounds.  Information about dates and booking options is available at the information point in Altenberg. Tel.: 02174-419950 or at Internet.

Here you can watch the film "Burg Berge - Der Film" produced by the association Landschaft und Geschichte eV.

Between March and October, you can also easily visit Burg Berge with the Bergisch Hiking Bus .
