Burscheid Dam Monument

On the eastern city limits of Burscheid and 1,2 km southwest of the Markusmühle, in the Eifgenbach valley, lie the abandoned relics of the former water treatment plant of the city of Burscheid.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a dam and weir were built in a bend of the Eifgenbach stream on the border between Burscheid and Wermelskirchen to impound the water. Further expansion of the "Burscheid Reservoir" took place in the 1930s. A canal connection and a ruined outflow channel can still be seen on the banks of the Eifgenbach today.
From 2008 onwards, the Burscheid dam was dismantled in several stages for ecological reasons in order to restore the permeability of the flowing water.
Remnants of the Burscheid dam can still be found today. A visit to the site, which is now a protected archaeological monument, can be perfectly combined with a hike on the Eifgenbach trail.
