The Wipperkotten

A vibrant grinding history

The Wipperkotten mill stands picturesquely at the confluence of the Weinsberger Bach stream and the rushing Wupper river. In this last large double mill complex in Solingen, you can watch the professionals at work. The grinding method has changed little over the centuries. 

On the ground floor, drive axles and transmission gears of the water power plant illustrate the function of the mill. Further exhibits provide more detailed information about the craft.

As a special highlight, groups can book a genuine Bergische Kaffeetafel (coffee table) in the so-called "Innenkotten" (inner cottage) before or after their museum tour, provided they book in advance.

The Wipperkotten through the ages

The origins of the Wipperkotten date back to 1605 and tell a turbulent history. The building fell victim to fire several times. It was last enlarged in 1858 and rebuilt as we know it today. Unfortunately, the Wipperkotten was severely damaged by flooding on the night of July 15, 2021. Repair work is still underway.

The Wipperkotten offers guided tours. Advance booking is required.
