Thick stones

Archaeological site
geological highlights
Below Homburg Castle, off the road to Holstein's Mill, lie the Dicken Steine (Thick Stones).
These are quartzite boulders from the Devonian period. They are dated to approximately 350 million years old. The quartzite stones were exposed by erosion from the softer marine rock. Impressions of crinoids and braconids can be found. This refutes the earlier theory that they were glacial erratics from the Ice Age or meteorites.
