Holpe, with its unique cultural and architectural characteristics, is of singular importance within the municipality of Morsbach. The self-contained, historically significant village center and the striking green spaces, such as those along the Holpener Bach stream, define Holpe's atmosphere. The old village center is dominated by the Protestant and Catholic churches. Around these two landmark buildings are grouped numerous other buildings worth preserving, some of which are listed as historical monuments (mostly half-timbered houses).
The residents of Holpe were also proud of their vibrant village structure, complete with a primary school, kindergarten, butcher, baker, savings bank, grocery store, post office, doctor, churches of both denominations including a cemetery, fire department, and funeral home. This concentration of infrastructure was rare in small villages like Holpe, as a study by the University of Cologne demonstrated. Unfortunately, these infrastructure facilities are increasingly disappearing.
Holpe was awarded the title of "Gold Village" at the district level by the evaluation committee "Our Village Should Become More Beautiful - Our Village Has a Future" in 1999 and 2002, and even at the state level in 2000. District Administrator Hans-Leo Kausemann praised the village at the time, saying: "All of Holpe is one big village community."
According to the State Conservator, Holpe is a "vivid historical document." "Its preservation is significant for the history of the people and the region," the State Conservator emphasizes, drawing attention to this historical witness to settlement history. Therefore, Holpe fulfills the criteria for designation as a protected historical area. An expert report by the State Conservator highlights the well-preserved historical village structure, the significant topography, and the visual connections.
Further details about the history and individual houses can be found in the download.
