Germana Chapel

Church
The beautiful Germana Chapel with a large picnic area is located directly on hiking trail #20 "Böllweg" in Much.
As early as 1710, there was a wayside shrine near Wersch, which was replaced by a permanent chapel in 1714. Pastor Friedrich Wilhelm Adams from Much (1871-1890) oversaw an extension in 1887. Shortly before (1867), Saint Germana had been canonized. She is considered the patron saint of shepherds. Since many girls in the Much region had to tend livestock at that time, Pastor Adams adopted this new patronage of shepherdesses. The weather vane, installed in 1975, depicts Saint Germana with a sheep and a shepherd's crook.

Germana was born near Toulouse in 1579 and died in 1601. Her life was marked by poverty. Mistreated by her stepmother, she was not allowed to attend school but had to tend sheep year after year. She even shared her meager bread with a poor old woman. When her coffin was opened after 43 years, her body was found to be incorrupt.

The Germana Chapel in Much is the only chapel in the Archdiocese of Cologne dedicated to Saint Germana. It lies southwest of the former youth hostel and can be reached from Much in about 10 minutes on foot.
