The Great Dhünn Dam
...is located in the middle of a nature reserve between the municipalities of Kürten, Odenthal, and Wermelskirchen. The large dam of the Dhünn Reservoir was completed in 1981. Since 1986, Germany's second-largest reservoir has supplied the region with water. Construction took a total of six years.
A so-called "Water Protection Zone 1" has been established around the entire reservoir to protect drinking water and the sensitive flora and fauna: Hiking is only permitted on the publicly accessible network of trails, and recreational sports are not allowed on the water itself. Entering Protection Zone 1 around the reservoir and leaving the designated hiking trails is prohibited.
Nevertheless, the reservoir offers beautiful hiking trails in a fantastic setting. Due to the vastness of the area, walkers rarely encounter another person – the perfect place to unwind and enjoy nature.
