The former Weiß mine was, at its peak, one of the most productive ore sources in the Bensberg mining district. Lead, zinc, and copper ore were mined there from 1853 until the 30s.
Today, the area is a Fauna-Flora-Habitat area, or FFH area for short. In these areas, the natural biodiversity is to be secured and promoted by preserving or restoring the habitats of wild animals and plants, based on the FFH Directive of the European Union.
The Weiß mine is now a habitat for several endangered animals. Frogs and toads, in particular, can be found in the ponds and spoil heaps. Those wishing to explore the Weiß mine can join guided tours focusing on various aspects such as mining, nature conservation, or landscape management. The mine is not otherwise open to the public. Group tours and tours for school classes are available upon request, even on weekdays.
