Sacred Heart Church
Consecrated in 1960, the church is one of the works of the renowned architect Gottfried Böhm. It is surrounded by a five-meter-high exposed concrete wall, whose wrought-iron gate allows a view into the interior. This includes the actual Böhm church, part of his cycle of "sacred courtyard houses" with its six conical roofs, the tower of the small St. Christopher Chapel, and an older building from 1925, now used as a parish hall, whose floor plan is reminiscent of a Jewish temple or a Romanesque basilica.
Jochen Pechau created the concrete relief of Noah's Ark, which, even on the outer wall, hints at the comforting interior. The light-flooded atrium with its integrated baptistery leads into the interior.
In the side aisle, the altar and the tabernacle form a visible unit, emphasized by red Italian marble.
Light streams through the canopy onto the altar, above which rises the church's tallest tower. The windows feature prayers from the Psalms, set in glass according to designs by Robert Rexhausen.
The crystal lights behind the altar and the glazing of the atrium were created by Karl Dedy from Schildgen.
Renovations took place in 1987 and again in 2011-2012.
