Odenthal was first documented in 1150 in a charter from Siegburg Abbey. However, the settlement and parish originated in the mid-10th century. Its founder was a Count Udo from the family of counts from the Lahngau region. His name is contained in the place name: Udendarre, a combination of the name Udo and the word "Darre," meaning "drainage," i.e., the clearing of a marshy area. Odenthal is therefore "Udo's drainage."
In the present-day village center, picturesque half-timbered houses cluster around the Romanesque parish church of St. Pankratius, one of the oldest churches in the Bergisches Land region. In the village square stands the bronze Witch Fountain by artist Walter Jansen, commemorating the history of witch hunts in Odenthal. Guided tours of the church and the historic village center are available upon request.
