Cox lime kilns

For generations, lime kilns, alongside mills, were the most important economic sector in this region. Of the approximately 80 lime kilns in Bergisch Gladbach, the Cox lime kilns are the last two remaining. Built in 1852 by Jakob Cox & Son, they were in operation until 1935. Today, both lime kilns are listed as historical monuments; the restoration of the masonry was completed in 2007. The Cox lime works forms a functional unit with the neighboring Marienhöhe quarry. The remains of a massive coral reef from the Middle Devonian period, dating back 350 million years, formed the basis for the limestone quarries in Bergisch Gladbach.
