Karlheinz-Stockhausen-Platz

Monument
Professor Karlheinz Stockhausen, composer and honorary citizen of the municipality of Kürten, is considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century, primarily for his pioneering role in electronic music. He lived in Kürten for 42 years and was named Kürten's only honorary citizen in 1988. Professor Stockhausen died on December 5, 2007, and is buried in the Kürten Forest Cemetery. A round stainless steel plate, two meters in diameter, designed by Karlheinz Stockhausen during his lifetime, forms the head of the grave. It displays a notation from the LICHT formula—a text from MICHAELION of WEDNESDAY made of LICHT—bearing the composer's signature, and the St. Michael's Cross is inscribed on the reverse.
On August 22, 2008, the day he would have turned 80, the town hall square "Marktfeld" was renamed "Karlheinz-Stockhausen-Platz." The Stockhausen Concerts and Courses in Kürten take place every two years. Managing and disseminating his musical legacy is the task of the Stockhausen Foundation for Music, which is gladly supported in this endeavor by the municipality of Kürten.

The grave of Karlheinz Stockhausen is located in the forest cemetery in Kürten.
