The area around the village was formerly called "Oppervelde." The name Wipperfeld is derived from the Wupper (Wipper) river. Parts of the present late Romanesque parish church likely date back to the earlier Romanesque church built in the 12th century. Construction of the new church began in 1892 according to the plans of C. Wiethase, after the old church had become too small and dilapidated towards the end of the 19th century. It was consecrated in 1894.
The oldest part of the village, located south of Federal Highway 506, consists of old half-timbered buildings and slate-clad farmhouses. Wipperfeld is also known for its International Hiking Days, which have been organized for years by the Wipperfeld Hiking Club and consistently attract several hundred hikers. Further information about the IVV Hiking Days and the surrounding hiking trails can be found [here/on the website]. here.
