Fairytale Forest Altenberg

Nestled in the Bergisches Land region near Cologne, the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm come to life in the Altenberg Fairy Tale Forest. Lovingly designed cottages, exciting stories, and animal encounters make the park a magical destination for the whole family. 
For almost 100 years, the Altenberg Fairy Tale Forest has captivated visitors of all ages. Along a picturesque path, 18 fairy tale characters have found their home in nostalgic cottages. Whether it's Little Red Riding Hood encountering the wolf or Rapunzel letting her hair down from the tower – here, the world-famous fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and their world full of legendary figures and fantastical adventures come to life. 

Real animals are also part of the park and enjoy being fed and petted. A large playground, inviting picnic areas, and the fairytale forest café make a visit a perfect outing for the whole family to experience magical moments amidst nature.

The Altenberg Fairy Tale Forest impresses not only with its enchanting setting but also with a variety of events that provide special experiences throughout the year. In spring, the exciting "Easter Rally" invites families to explore the forest in search of hidden treasures. In summer, the park transforms into a vibrant place full of games and surprises for young and old during the "Fairy Tale Forest Festival." In autumn, the "Spooky Days" send shivers down your spine with eerily beautiful decorations and a haunted labyrinth, making the Fairy Tale Forest the perfect backdrop for a child-friendly Halloween. In winter, the Fairy Tale Forest awaits its guests with atmospheric lighting: the Winter Magic invites you to a romantic stroll along the illuminated fairy tale trail.

For the safety of our guests, the park may remain closed due to adverse weather conditions. Should this occur, you will be informed daily on the Märchenwald Facebook page.

The adjacent Fairytale Forest Restaurant offers a feast for all the senses. Another attraction in the Fairytale Forest Restaurant is the "Dancing Fountains," a water organ where brightly illuminated water figures move as if by magic to classical music. You can find the current show times for the water features at the restaurant.

Between March and October, you can also easily visit the fairytale forest with the Bergisch Hiking Bus .
