Market square with market fountain

The market square in the heart of the Hanseatic city of Wipperfürth embodies quality of life and – especially in summer – a Mediterranean feel. Numerous restaurants, bistros, and pubs in the old buildings that line the large square invite visitors to linger. On warm days, people love to gather outside in one of the beer gardens.

The picturesque town hall is the centerpiece of the market square. Directly in front of it stands the market fountain, adorned with the heraldic animal of the former Duchy of Berg, the Bergish Lion. The town hall and fountain together are a popular subject for photographs. Right next to the market fountain is the Engelbert Column, upon which the city's patron saint, Engelbert of Berg, is enthroned as a bronze sculpture.

The redevelopment of the old town and the market square has not only calmed traffic in the heart of the oldest town in the Bergisches Land region and its charming shopping streets, but particular emphasis was also placed on barrier-free design. Even though not all shops and restaurants are wheelchair accessible due to the historic structure of the old town, it is still easily explored by wheelchair, walker, or stroller.
