:metabolon - Environmental learning center and leisure fun

Anyone who whizzes down Germany's longest double slide (110 meters, suitable for ages 8 and up) on mats from the hill at the :metabolon site might find it hard to believe they're on a former landfill. The climb to the top of the cone is rewarded not only with a fantastic view – those who wish can also comfortably slide down the first few meters. Currently, the slide is open every Saturday and Sunday from 14:00 PM to 18:00 PM. During school holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia, it's also open Mondays to Fridays from 13:00 PM to 16:00 PM. During the transformation of the area into an environmental education, research, and recreation center, a mountain bike park, a cross-golf course, a Segway track, and a low ropes course were created, among other things. Hiking is also possible on the former landfill site. Along an energy trail, the compost worm "Leppel" explains environmental science to children. A long, curved slide (for ages 3 and up) also provides fun for younger children.

The highlight for visitors is the 360-degree view from the artificial landfill hill, whose summit can be reached after climbing 360 steps. Small trampolines at the top offer further opportunities for exercise. Along the way, whether ascending or descending, visitors can peer into numerous garbage cans and learn all sorts of interesting facts about waste management – ​​some of these cans can even talk.

At the foot of the mountain, an exhibition on the theme "House of the Future" can be seen, focusing on energy efficiency and energy-efficient building renovation.

The :metabolon Bistro offers refreshing drinks, coffee, ice cream, a daily changing lunch menu, and other treats. The bistro is open Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. and on Sundays, weather permitting, from 12:00 p.m. to 17:00 p.m.

The exhibition "Linear Becomes Circular – From Knowledge to Action" – located directly next to the waste wall – invites visitors of all ages to interactively explore the world of circular value creation through various exhibits and displays. Featuring a range of products as examples of circular value creation in regional companies, the exhibition is an interactive highlight at the site and is open to visitors.

Some leisure activities are only available on weekends (Saturday/Sunday) as they coincide with regular waste disposal operations during the week. The viewing platform and bistro are accessible every day during opening hours.
