Majestically, Homburg Castle towers over the Homburg region, surrounded by forests and meadows.
Homburg Castle is a historically significant site in the Bergisches Land region. It was first documented in 1276, but its origins date back even further. Archaeological finds from 1999 suggest that a round tower, a so-called donjon, already stood in the upper castle courtyard in the 11th century. The castle itself evolved from an early medieval hilltop castle belonging to the Counts of Sayn (later Sayn-Wittgenstein-Homburg). Its appearance has changed continuously over the centuries, and in the 17th century it acquired the Baroque castle look that characterizes it today.
Homburg Castle has served as a museum since 1926. Today, the museum's collection, which is operated by the Oberbergischer Kreis district, comprises over 20.000 cultural and historical objects. The castle's exhibition invites visitors on a journey through the centuries: the topics range from the history of the castle and the region to the diverse ways of working and living in the Bergisches Land from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. From Baroque hunting and regional portraiture to the presentation of a historical armory – the displays in the exhibition's themed rooms offer exciting discoveries for all visitors.
The museum can be visited without a guided tour during opening hours. Guided tours for groups, kindergartens and schools, as well as children's birthday parties, can be booked via [website/contact information]. www.schloss-homburg.de/museum/museum_erleben/

Important Information:

The collection presentation at the castle is currently undergoing a comprehensive overhaul. This includes renovations to the floors, electrical systems, and lighting. During this modernization, the entire exhibition in the castle will be temporarily closed to visitors. The special exhibition "Mechanical Animal World" (until May 17, 2026), as well as the castle tower and the natural history exhibition in the forester's lodge, remain open as usual. During the construction work, a reduced admission price of €3,50 applies to adults, and admission is free for children under 18 in the open areas.

If you have any questions, please contact the visitor service at 02261 8841-71 (Tue.-Sun. 11 a.m. to 18 p.m.).

Already booked programs will take place. There may be some adjustments to the venue layout, and the museum will inform you of these in a timely manner.
