In the northeastern part of the municipality, near the village of Börlinghausen, lies the "Wupper Source Area" nature reserve. It is a 4-hectare hillside spring fen with original vegetation types that are threatened with extinction in the rest of the district.
Below this area, the 37 springs of the Wupper River that originate in this region have been grouped together to form a representative ecological source. The Wupper, which gave its name to the largest city in the Bergisches Land region, Wuppertal, is still called the Wipper in the area of the municipality of Marienheide.
Further downstream, the Wipper develops into a wide river and is named the Wupper. The river supplies the industries of the Bergisches Land region with the necessary process water.
