Hückeswagen Castle (currently closed)

Hückeswagen Castle stands atop a promontory overlooking the town center. The town's landmark was first mentioned in 1189, though the Counts of Hückeswagen were documented as early as 1138. In 1260, the County of Hückeswagen was sold to the Counts of Berg and remained inhabited until 1800. In the following decades, the castle fell into increasing disrepair. It was only after being acquired by private owners that Hückeswagen Castle underwent extensive restoration in the mid-19th century.

The north wing houses the fascinating local history museum, showcasing, among other things, Bergisch domestic culture from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as characteristic Bergisch crafts. Medieval history is documented with charters and seals of the great counts and lords of the castle. Various historical films are shown on a modern video wall.
