St. Boniface Church, Wildbergerhütte

Construction took three years and cost approximately €1,5 million. The unusual architecture was not the only challenge for the craftsmen.

Abundant natural stone and wood, red bricks for a splash of color, glass for the windows, and a touch of steel, with very sparing use of concrete – these building materials dominate the church. The consistent reduction to natural materials also presented a challenge for the craftsmen. The colorful brickwork, "imported" by architects from southern Italy, was laid in a herringbone pattern by the masons. Local greywacke, sandstone, and even the paving stones on the church floor are reminiscent of old traditions in the Oberberg region. Nevertheless, the unusual prevails in this church, including the pews made of untreated wood, which only acquired its distinctive grain over time.

The organ is no longer installed on a gallery, but integrated into the central room.

The centrally planned, octagonal church is spanned by a wide gable roof supported by three laminated beams on six massive pillars. Only two stained-glass windows, depicting Saint Barbara and Saint Boniface, remain as reminders of the old church, built in 1862 and located 300 meters from the present one. It was demolished in the 70s due to its dilapidated condition. Saint Barbara is the patron saint of the miners who once worked here, and Saint Boniface is the Apostle of the Germans.
