Thomas More Academy
There, at its heart, stands Cologne Cathedral, the symbol and center of a vibrant and life-affirming Rhine city. Its location on the "Bergischer Balkon" (Bergish Balcony) quickly reveals the academy's programmatic focus. It is not only a place of overview for those who enjoy thinking outside the box and appreciating the breadth of the horizon, whether in current social, ecological, or political debates. It is also a place of retreat for those who ascend to the "Bergischer Balkon" to explore theological questions, cultural highlights, spiritual experiences, or even culinary events, such as the regular cultural dinners, during conferences or evening discussions.
Those seeking further inspiration at significant historical, artistic and cultural sites both at home and abroad will also find it through one-day explorations or multi-day holiday academies offered by the Thomas-Morus-Akademie Bensberg with its wide educational excursion program.
Its namesake
The Thomas More Academy in Bensberg, located in the Archdiocese of Cologne, is named after the English Lord Chancellor Thomas More (1478-1535), whom Henry VIII had condemned to death. More, quite exceptionally for his time, championed the education of his daughters, ensuring they received the same level of learning as his son. His eldest daughter, Margaret Roper, was one of the most learned women of her era. Canonized in 1935, Thomas More was declared the patron saint of politicians in 2000. In his work "Utopia," he outlined a vision of an ideal society. The Thomas More Academy in Bensberg is dedicated to reflecting on and interpreting societal, social, cultural, economic, political, and ecological developments. In addition to conferences, art exhibitions, projects, workshops, and seminars, the Academy designs and conducts study programs and summer academies.
