Wahner Heide

Spanning 5,000 hectares, the area on the western edge of Rösrath provides a refuge for around 700 endangered plant and animal species. Here you'll find flowering heaths, moors and swamp forests, ponds and near-natural streams, and a beautiful, open dune landscape. While hiking, you'll encounter herds of goats and cattle, and occasionally water buffalo may cross your path. The "Rösrath Heath Walk," offered free of charge once a month, is highly recommended.

The new "Turmhof Heathland Portal" is one of four gateways to the Wahner Heide heathland: Visitors will find a heathland library, an exhibition space, the Turmhof shop, and the Bergische Raptor Rescue Center on the grounds at Kammerbroich. The central theme is "Dynamics"—the information center focuses primarily on the natural forces in nature and the landscape, as well as the heath's geological history. The on-site Biological Station undertakes nature conservation tasks and serves as a central contact point for conservationists.
