Relaxation and action in the Wiehlaue

Essentially, there are two parks bordering and connected in the Wiehl floodplain: Wiehlpark and Alter Kurpark. Both areas were redesigned between 2019 and 2023. Whether you're looking for relaxation or action, the Wiehl floodplain has something for everyone.

The centerpiece of Wiehlpark is the large body of water and the lakeside café right next to it. The lakeside café is more than just a place to eat and drink; it also serves as a service station. So, in addition to relaxing and enjoying yourself, you'll find everything you need there, including a mini-golf course. The lakeside café is open daily from 10:00 AM to 22:00 PM.
The attractions in detail:
  • Mini golf course: The 18 holes offer challenges for your skill with a club and ball and provide a tournament atmosphere. Clubs and balls can be rented at the lakeside café – located at the rear of the building. Prices: Adults €4,50, children €3,50, family ticket (two adults plus two children) €14,00. Bookings can be made through the lakeside café. info@seecafe-wiehl.de
  • Playgrounds for younger children: Right next to the mini-golf course are areas with spinning games, a carousel and surfaces that are ideal for driving over with a Bobby Car.
  • Playground by the water: Wooden pirate ships offer plenty of opportunities for climbing, hiding, and playing. Set sail on a grand adventure without getting wet! More attractions await on the other side of the river.
  • Cable tunnel over the Wiehl: It connects the new and older play areas on both banks. Children can climb through the tunnel over the water, experiencing an exciting crossing. A few meters further on, there's a regular bridge over the river – for people on bicycles or on foot.
  • Inclusive playground: Designed for everyone; with equipment designed so that children with and without physical disabilities can play together naturally. An offering whose design also invites grandparents to join in the barrier-free fun.
  • Barbecue areas: Those wishing to barbecue with friends will find three barbecue areas near the lakeside café, one of which is covered – offering ideal conditions for gatherings in small and large groups. The covered barbecue area can be booked through the lakeside café: Tel. +49 1522 9278976, Email info@seecafé-wiehl.deThe other two seats can be used without a reservation.
  • Streetball courts: Two courts, two baskets for tricks and training with basketball outdoors
  • Sea terraces: Seating steps invite visitors to linger directly on the water's edge. Similar opportunities can also be found at the edge of the inlet from the Wiehl River into the lake.
  • Large meadow: Hot air balloons launch from here when the weather is suitable. Otherwise, the area is available for sunbathing, playing, and recreation.
  • Stepping stones across the Mottelbach stream: From stone to stone, from one bank to the other – with a little skill, the Mottelbach can be crossed at this point even without a bridge.
  • Paved roads: Ideal for cycling enthusiasts and for use with strollers, walkers and wheelchairs, in any weather.
  • Renaturalized Wiehl riverbank: not a confined river course, but a more naturally designed bed including marginal areas where the water finds its way and habitats for animals and plants are created.
  • Wheelpark: The 1.100 square meter sports facility attracts beginners as well as professionals and combines two skate pools with spines and other elements such as benches and stair railings.
The adjacent Old spa park as a place for all senses also offers:
  • Central area with water feature: A special attraction during the warmer months, also suitable for smaller events
  • River steps: Located in the immediate vicinity of the water feature, the seating steps are ideal for relaxing hours by the water.
  • Boules court: An opportunity to practice the French national sport: relaxing and challenging at the same time.
  • Herb garden: Ancient medicinal plants in a colorful variety: In summer, the area is not only a treat for the eyes, but also for the nose.
  • Fitness equipment: Two cross trainers and three exercise bikes are available free of charge.
  • Fruit farm: Pear, apple and plum trees are grouped together in the meadow right next to the town hall – all visitors to the park can help themselves to the ripe fruit.
Short ways
The projects in the Wiehl floodplain have successfully integrated urban development, recreational needs, and ecology. Furthermore, there are numerous access points to the Wiehlpark and the Old Spa Park. A completely new feature is the direct access to the Wiehlpark from Bahnhofstraße – via a newly installed staircase. The newly established wayfinding and information system, consisting of steles and panels, provides orientation across a total of 24 elements, including in the city center.

Service in the park
Battery low? Near the lakeside café, you'll find charging stations next to the bike racks. These stations can be used to recharge e-bike batteries, and smartphones can also be charged here. Restrooms are available for guests at the café and for the public at the rear of the covered barbecue area between 10:00 AM and 22:00 PM. Three of the restrooms are not only wheelchair accessible but also offer changing tables. The doors are compatible with Eurokeys. Dispensers with free bags are available for the disposal of waste from four-legged park visitors.

Restrictions on the shore
By the time of the grand opening celebration at the end of August 2023, the main remaining work in the park was completed. Currently, the section between Wiehlpark and Kurpark on the southern bank of the Wiehl River is not yet open. The connection runs across the private property of Volksbank Oberberg – construction work by the Volksbank is ongoing there until further notice.

The grounds are freely accessible.
