Wilkenroth

The village was first documented in 1436. The name Wilkenroth derives from the personal name "Williko," and the suffix "roth," formerly "rode," comes from clearing. It is assumed that the settlement "Willikorode" originated during the clearing phase (800-1000 AD). In 1571, Wilkenroth had 12 farms and approximately 80 inhabitants.
Until 1894, the village belonged to the parish of Waldbröl and was then assigned to the newly founded parish of Denklingen. Today, the village is part of the town of Waldbröl.
The village community first participated in the "Our Village Should Become More Beautiful" competition in 1973. In 1985, the village won the silver plaque in the state competition. This was followed by the "Gold Village at the District Level" award in 2002, bronze in the state competition in 2003, gold again at the district level in 2005, and silver at the state level in 2006. Gold was awarded once more at the district level in 2008, and in 2009 the village participated in the state competition "Our Village Has a Future," winning the silver plaque.
Wilkenroth is therefore an excellent village.
