A TRADITION OF HOSPITALITY

The traditional “Bergische Kaffeetafel” (coffee and snacks) and the typical German “Nachmittagskaffee” (afternoon coffee) are essentially quite different: At a “Bergische Kaffeetafel”, a wide selection of both sweet and savoury delicacies are served. In the past, everything the establishment had to offer was laid out on the table for special occasions. Even back then the city folk knew to appreciate this and often visited the Bergisches Land as guests.

 

 

AN OPULENTLY DECORATED TABLE

In addition to fresh coffee from the “Dröppelmina” (an old-fashioned coffee pot), yeast cake, black bread and brown bread, sweet spreads and hearty toppings are an intrinsic part of the “Bergisch Kaffeetafel”. And of course, there simply must be Bergisch waffles, traditionally served with warm cherries and cream or rice pudding with cinnamon and sugar. Various cakes, eggs or scrambled eggs may also be served. Finally, a strong Bergisch korn schnapps helps with digestion.

 

QUAINT AND COSY

Many hosts serve the “Bergisch Kaffeetafel” in cosy restaurants, often in the quaint atmosphere of a traditional timber-framed house. Usually, everyone sits together in a group for several hours, enjoys the “Bergisch Kaffeetafel” and uses the time for some serious conversation.
