Black and white cows are the four-legged animals that hikers most often encounter on tours in the Bergisches Land region. On the "Farm Trail," however, hikers not only get to know this dairy cow breed, but also learn a great deal at various farms about other farm animals such as geese, chickens, and pigs, about the work of farmers, and about typical crops grown in the Bergisches Land fields.
Along the 12,6-kilometer circular trail, richly illustrated information panels guide hikers through the history of agriculture, showing how the potato began its triumphant march across Germany and why asparagus is a true harbinger of spring. There are also plenty of clever ideas to discover with which farmers in the Bergisches Land region are creating new economic pillars: from farm shops and farm cafés to Christmas tree sales and a huge biomass power plant that is fueled by manure and food scraps, among other things, and can supply numerous houses and apartments with electricity and heating.
Not only experienced hikers can learn interesting facts about life on the farm on this trail. Each of the eleven information panels also offers child-friendly texts featuring the mouse from the German children's television program "Die Sendung mit der Maus" (The Show with the Mouse), perfect for young hikers.
Part of the tour follows the "Bergischer Weg" trail.
With the Schiefelbusch farm, the Gammersbach mill (open on weekends), and the Krewelshof (about 2 km away), there are three farms/farm cafés along the way that invite you to stop for refreshments. The bistro at the Auel golf club also welcomes hungry hikers.
Walking time: about 4 hours
The trail has a total of 11 information panels. We thank Guido Wagner, who maintains the trail as a volunteer trail steward.

Directions
The "Farm Trail" in Lohmar is a circular hiking trail that leads predominantly along wide, paved field and farm tracks outside of towns, but also along smaller paths in the area of the golf course (sturdy footwear is recommended). It includes some long ascents and descents and is therefore not suitable for small children or strollers.
From Honrath train station, the route initially leads through the forest up to Schlehecken and continues along mostly paved farm tracks to the Schiefelbusch farm and the Gammersbach mill. Beyond the mill, a path widens and leads through the forest up to the charming village of Muchensiefen. The "Farm Path" then takes us along field tracks to Spechtsberg, from where we descend once more through the forest to the Agger River. There, we encounter the golf course at Auel Castle, which we cross (partly on narrow paths, partly on wider tracks) back up to Honrath. Finally, in Honrath, we descend on quiet roads back to the starting point at the train station.
