The approximately 1,4 kilometer long "Bergische Komfortspazierweg" (Bergisch Comfort Walk) runs around Altenberg Cathedral, offering special experiences for all visitors.
The starting point is at the cathedral or the tourist information office in the Altenberg Cathedral shop. From here, the path leads past several exhibits towards the former orangery. Numerous rest areas along the route invite everyone to pause and take a break. The path then loops back along the Pfengstbach stream towards the cathedral – here, the information panels and audio stations about the Cistercians are worth mentioning, offering interested visitors a direct insight into the lives of the monks some 500 years ago.

A gentle incline leads walkers back to the north side of the cathedral, where the path turns towards the Küchenhof – an inn in Altenberg dating back to 1755, located directly next to St. Mark's Chapel. Passing the building complex, the detour leads into the herb garden, where a variety of aromas await visitors. Many different herbs and medicinal plants, which were cultivated and used by monks hundreds of years ago, offer a unique olfactory experience.

The Bergische Komfortspazierweg (Bergisch Comfort Walk) leads back to the main path through the local park and offers barrier-free access at the far end to the picturesque highlight of this loop: the Malerwinkel (Painter's Corner). Many (more or less) talented artists have sat here and tried to capture the unique panorama of the cathedral. Today, this spot invites visitors to take photos or simply linger – it's quite pleasant below the former monastery walls.

On the way back to the starting point, you can use the park path again if you want to travel barrier-free – for all climbing enthusiasts, the Theodor-Heuss-Path is recommended, which can be reached above the Malerwinkel by a staircase and offers a beautiful way back to the cathedral.

Finally, there's an opportunity to stop at one of the many restaurants and round off your tour with delicious regional specialties. Bergische waffles, Potthucke (a type of potato pancake), and herb salads made with ingredients from the garden are just a few examples.

The following experiences await you along the way:

  • 5 information panels
  • 5 audio stations
  • barrier-free access to the cathedral
  • Picnic area at Malerwinkel
  • barrier-free access to the Altenberg Cathedral shop
  • Public and bookable cathedral tours
  • Restaurants in the immediate vicinity
