The Bergischer Weg is Germany's most beautiful hiking trail in 2024!

On the trail of the Wahnbach stream
From Much, where the young writer Heinrich Böll and his family found refuge during the Second World War, this stage leads through the sparsely populated Wahnbach Valley. Sometimes on the heights, sometimes in the valley, the path runs mostly in the shade of extensive forests and skirts the picturesque Herrenteich pond – the "Much Sea." In the final third, the stage offers glimpses of wide valley meadows and scenic views across the hills of the Bergisches Land region.

If you hike the Bergischer Weg trail and take photos at certain locations, you can collect points and receive a hiking badge. More information is available here.

We would like to thank Alexander Frings, who oversees the path as a volunteer path steward.

Directions

The tenth stage largely follows wide, and sometimes narrow, forest paths, always keeping pace with the Wahnbach stream. From the edge of Much, the trail initially widens as it winds through the forest alongside the stream, then climbs a short hill to Leverath. There, it follows a tributary of the Wahnbach directly to the Herrenteich pond. After passing the village of Kreuzkapelle, the Bergische Wege trail continues along mostly wide forest paths with gentle ups and downs to the Hof Huppenhardt animal sanctuary. From there, it leads past Oberwennerscheid to Niederwennerscheid, where hikers are greeted by a herd of alpacas. The trail then follows initially narrow, then wider forest paths, approaching the Wahnbach once more before a narrow path leads up to the edge of Neunkirchen.
