This stage is really challenging!
Not only because of its length, but also due to the constant ups and downs along the Wupper slopes during the first ten kilometers, this stage can certainly be described as challenging. However, the route offers attractive opportunities for excursions, for example in Solingen-Obenrüden and Odenthal-Altenberg, and the first glimpses of Cologne Cathedral!
This stage leads to the "cradle of the Bergisches Land": Altenberg was once home to the first castle of the Counts of Berg, who gave the region its name. Today, the former Cistercian church of Altenberg – the "Bergisches Dom" – is particularly impressive. The route there first leads through the Wupper Valley in Solingen and Leichlingen. One of Germany's oldest drinking water reservoirs lies along the way, as do old grinding mills and the enchanting Lambertsmühle near Burscheid. A detour to the flower town of Leichlingen, whose surrounding area is known as the "fruit basket of the Bergisches Land," is also highly recommended.

Directions
- From Burg, the trail initially follows partly stony paths through the wooded slopes along the Wupper River, before continuing from Fähr via forest and farm tracks to the Diepentalsperre reservoir. Near Bremersheide, Cologne Cathedral comes into view for the first time. The route then proceeds along quiet roads and field paths to the Bornheimer Bach stream and a second view of the cathedral near Kämersheide, before reaching the historic Lambertsmühle mill in the Wiembach valley. Following the Landscheider Bach stream, the Bergischer Weg trail leads to Sträßchen and finally down into the idyllic Eifgenbach valley, which flows into the Dhünn valley shortly before the stage's end, on the outskirts of Altenberg. In Altenberg, one of the highlights of the Bergisches Land region awaits the weary hikers: Altenberg Cathedral.

- During the flooding in July 2022, the bridge at Obenrüdener Kotten was washed away. Therefore, the village of Obenrüden and the Rüdenstein inn can only be reached via the Rödeler Bridge in Fähr (via the access path to Untenrüden). Alternatively, you can cross the Wupper River at Wupperhof and hike to Obenrüden on the north bank (follow the triangle marker). (Status: October 11, 2024)
