Beer has been brewed in Wiehl-Bielstein since 1900, earning the town the honorary title of "Beer Village." The Beer Trail offers insights into the history of the local Erzquell Brewery and the art of brewing. It traces the origins of the ingredients used for centuries in accordance with the German Purity Law of 1516: barley, hops, and water.

The 13,4-kilometer circular trail leads hikers to the spring that supplies the water for Bielstein's beer. Hikers learn that malt, derived from barley, determines both the beer's color and flavor, as well as the secrets of hops and yeast.

The seven richly illustrated information panels along the trail also explain why Kölsch is brewed in the heart of the Bergisches Land region. Along the way, hikers on the "Beer Trail" learn the difference between top-fermented and bottom-fermented beers, discover interesting facts about beers from around the world, and are surprised to learn that even Kölsch and Altbier share a crucial characteristic. One side effect of the trail, however, cannot be ruled out: it can make hikers quite thirsty...

Part of the tour runs along the "Bergischer Panoramasteig" trail.

The trail has a total of 7 information panels. We thank Rainer Schmidt, who maintains the trail as a volunteer trail steward.

Kölsch Beer Caves Guild:

FOR A COLD BEER DURING THE HIKE

For those who don't want to lug around a heavy cooler bag while hiking the Beer Trail, but still want a cold beer (or Fassbrause), there are now underground-chilled bottles. At five locations, so-called "hop caves" have been sunk into the ground, each holding 15 bottles of ZUNFT Kölsch, ZUNFT Sportsfreund, or ZUNFT Fassbrause. Even in summer, the 0,33-liter bottles stay nice and cool underground.

You can book the filling of the caves at the Gasthaus Kranenberg (Christian Kahl) by phone: +49 2262 7976598 or +49 170 5929817 or email: info@haus-kranenberg.de. The price is €30 for a cave filled with 15 bottles. After booking, you will receive a code to open the lock in the ground. Then you can enjoy a refreshing drink during your hike!

Please put the empty bottles back in the cave afterwards and be sure to take the bottle caps with you. A bottle opener is located in the cave. Thank you!

Directions

The "Beer Trail" is a circular hiking route that follows forest and farm tracks as well as quiet roads, and includes some longer climbs. From the bus station in Bielstein, the trail leads first to the park and then along a former railway line and forest and field paths to the brewery spring in Linden. After a short loop through residential streets, the trail continues along the edge of the forest and fields uphill to Hengstenberg, where a view rewards the effort.

The "Beer Trail" continues with gentle ups and downs through the forest and past fields to Faulmert, Steinacker, and Gassenhagen. Via farm tracks and small roads, it eventually reaches Nallingen and Krahm, from where it returns to Damte and Bielstein via field and forest paths along the ridge. In Bielstein, the trail descends via steps and footpaths to Bielsteiner Straße and, with a final detour, to the Erzquell Brewery.
