Enchanted paths to mills and fairy tales
Away from main roads and settlements, the wildly romantic Eifgenbach Valley invites you to a long-distance hike with much to discover. From old mills and former spa facilities in a state of suspended animation to an early castle ruin, the sights along the path, which leads through largely unspoiled nature, are numerous.

The Eifgenanlage park in Wermelskirchen offers a starting point for the Eifgenbachweg trail. This park and recreational area was the pride of the burgeoning town at the end of the 19th century. The Berger Mühle mill, about 1,5 kilometers downstream, is considered one of the oldest half-timbered houses in the Bergisches Land region. From the "Neuemühle" (New Mill), legends, fairy tales, and the memory of a devastating fire accompany hikers on their way to the Rausmühle and Markusmühle mills.

The remains of the Frohntal Hammer mill offer an impressive testament to the former use of the Eifgenbach stream; its waterwheel originally powered a wool spinning mill and cloth factory. Besides gaining insights into the flora and fauna of the Eifgenbach valley, hikers will learn about the successes of nature conservation efforts, such as the dismantling of the former Burscheid drinking water reservoir. Finally, the ruins of Eifgenburg Castle, located just before the end of the trail, offer an opportunity for a fascinating journey back to the Early Middle Ages.

Eifgenbachweg - A stream tells its story

In the south, this route leads to the "Bergischer Weg" (Bergisch Trail). From Neuemühle, there is a connecting path to the "Bergischer Panoramasteig" (Bergisch Panorama Trail).

The Eifgenbachweg is part of the new hiking trail network :dhünnhochfläche, which was developed as part of the Regionale 2010.

The trail has a total of 14 information panels.

Directions

The "Eifgenbachweg" is a long-distance hiking trail that leads predominantly along natural forest paths through the idyllic Eifgen Valley. It runs continuously alongside the Eifgenbach stream – sometimes directly along the streambed, sometimes slightly higher – and crosses the stream several times.

The Eifgental valley is a nature reserve, so please stay on the paths and keep your dog on a leash. Depending on the time of year, it can be a bit muddy in some places, so you should wear sturdy footwear. The trail follows the existing Eifgenbachweg path and is only occasionally marked with a white 5 on a red background – the continuous marker is a green and white "e".

Since the Eifgenbachweg is a linear hiking trail between Eifgen and Schöllerhof, the hiking bus (line 267) runs on weekends and public holidays between March and October.
