Anyone strolling through the picturesque old town of Bergneustadt would hardly suspect that the town fell victim to devastating fires on several occasions. With great zeal, the people of Bergneustadt have always rebuilt their homes. It is no coincidence that the town is today an important center for firefighting in North Rhine-Westphalia, and not only because of the firefighters' recreation center founded here in 1956.
The 12-kilometer-long "Fire & Flame Trail" demonstrates that the people on the border between the Oberbergisches Land and the Sauerland regions embraced fire prevention with great zeal from an early age. It leads from the old town to Wiedenest, where Christians in the Middle Ages built one of the now widely admired "Bonten Kerken" (Painted Churches). The trail also features an impressive memorial to a fervent advocate of peace, a lookout tower (still used by firefighters as a lookout point during forest fires), and a water reservoir, without which even the most modern firefighting equipment would be of little use.
This tour takes you on a journey through the history of the fire brigade, which dates back to the ancient Romans, as well as to the present-day Phönix conference hotel, housed in the former fire brigade recreation center. Finally, a unique collection of fire helmets from around the world and in-depth insights into Bergneustadt's eventful history await you at the Bergneustadt Local History Museum at the end of the tour.
Part of the hike follows the Bergischer Panoramasteig trail.
The trail has a total of 7 information panels. We thank Michael Kresin, who maintains the trail as a volunteer trail steward.

Directions
The "Fire and Flame Trail" is a circular hiking route that runs largely through wooded areas, but also includes approximately three kilometers through the town of Bergneustadt. From the local history museum, the trail leads first through the town center to the Bergneustadt school camp and then along forest paths on the hillside to the Bonten Kerke church and over a hill to Wiedenest.
Beyond Wiedenest, the "Fire and Flame Trail" ascends along forest paths and trails to its highest point, the Beulberg. About a kilometer further on, a side path leads to the observation tower; halfway down this path, the trail descends through the forest to Hackenberg. Quiet roads and steps will then take you back to the old town and the local history museum. Please remember to wear sturdy footwear.
Trail type: 12 kilometer long circular hiking trail
Road surface: Forest and farm tracks, low-traffic roads.
