Homeland Trail (Stroll #3)

The "Bergische Heimatlied" (Bergish Homeland Song), which originated in Solingen at the end of the 19th century, is now considered the anthem of the entire region between the Rhine and Sauerland, Ruhr and Sieg rivers. The song's six verses accompany hikers on the "Heimatweg" (Homeland Trail) through Wipperfürth and its surroundings, bringing them closer to the land, its people, and the unique characteristics of the Bergisches Land region.

The trail reveals how the medieval town of Wipperfürth originated at the ford across the Wupper River, as well as the traces of the numerous devastating town fires. Hikers encounter Engelbert von Berg, who granted Wipperfürth its town charter at the beginning of the 13th century, and learn about the importance of water for the early economic development of the region. From the historic town center, along the banks of the Wupper, and up to the dam of the Neye Reservoir, the approximately 11-kilometer circular route offers not only panoramic views of the Bergisches Land hills but also glimpses into other parts of the region. Visitors can discover fascinating facts about the "Bergisches Dreiklang" (a regional tradition of half-timbered construction), the Lindlar quarries, Leichlingen, the "fruit basket" of the Bergisches Land, and the hydraulic engineering in this region blessed with abundant rainfall. The Wipperfürth "Heimatweg" also offers an overview of the thematic focuses of the other 23 STREIFZÜGE in the "Bergisches Wanderland".
