Altenberg monastery landscape path

The Cistercian monastery landscapes still exhibit typical elements today. What is special about them is that these elements do not occur in isolated cases, but can be found in similar forms throughout Europe.

The reason for this lies primarily in the structure of the order and its extremely successful network, which is why the Cistercians are often referred to as the "first Europeans".

The Cisterscapes network has 17 partners in five countries, 
It represents a cross-section of the more than one hundred formerly active Cistercian monasteries in Europe.

The Altenberg monastery landscape is part of this European network. Along this circular route, ten information panels provide insights into the lives of the monks in Altenberg and the immediate surroundings.
