390 million years ago, when the Bergisches Land region was still on the coast of a tropical sea, a stone was formed in Lindlar by sand deposits and high pressure, a stone that has made the town world-famous over the past centuries. To this day, Lindlar greywacke is quarried at Brungerst Mountain. The stone can be found as floor tiles in Dubai, in a lounge at Frankfurt Airport, or, sliced wafer-thin, in the bathroom of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's yacht.
The newly created "Stonemason's Trail" follows in the footsteps of the people who have quarried and processed stone for centuries, leading from the center of Lindlar up to the quarries on the Brungerst hill. Along the way, visitors can discover historic buildings and monuments made of greywacke, which testify to the craftsmanship of Lindlar's stonemasons. On the hill, the Stonemason's Trail offers insights into abandoned quarries from past centuries and into current quarrying operations. The trail also presents the former Lindlar train station, to which the stones from the Brungerst were transported via an ingenious brake track.
On the 6,2 kilometer long circular route, hikers learn not only a lot about the formation of the Lindlar greywacke, but also about the life of the stonemasons, the dangers of working in the quarry and the guild in which the workers joined together early on to form a strong community.
Lindlar is a stage town on the "Bergischer Panoramasteig" trail.
The trail has a total of 8 information panels and 2 audio stations. We would like to thank Christoph Scherer, who maintains the trail as a volunteer trail steward.
As part of the Bergische Wanderwochen (Bergisch Hiking Weeks), a guided hike on the Steinhauerpfad (Stonemason's Path) will take place on May 2nd, 2026: Stonemason's Trail and Greywacke Museum.

Directions
The "Stonemason's Trail" is a circular hiking route leading to various quarries, running along narrow paths and farm tracks outside of town (sturdy footwear is recommended). From the market square, the trail initially leads through the town center to Plietz Park and up to the former train station. After crossing the "Altenlinde" road, the route leaves the busy roads and continues along narrow paths and forest tracks up to former quarries and still-operating quarries.
A viewing platform offers glimpses into an active quarry and views extending to Cologne Cathedral. Beyond the quarries, the path leads along forest tracks, farm roads, and lightly trafficked streets to the cemetery and back to the village center. Short side paths lead to information panels E and F; please pay particular attention to the markings here. The "Stonemason's Trail" is also very interesting for children, but not suitable for strollers.
