The tour "On the road on disused railway lines" runs continuously on the two railway cycle paths "Panorama cycle path Balkantrasse" and "Bergischer Panorama cycle path", which are part of the total 340 km long Panorama cycle path network.
This route connects the former railway lines in the Bergisches Land region, the southern Ruhr area, and the Sauerland, creating links to the popular riverside cycle paths along the Rhine, Ruhr, and Sieg rivers. Where trains once drove industrialization, breathtaking natural panoramas, rural idylls, and urban life can now be experienced from a cyclist's perspective – all on former railway lines converted into cycle paths. Pure cycling pleasure!

Apart from the town center of Wermelkirchen, which, with its typical Bergisches Land houses and excellent restaurants and shops, invites visitors to stroll or enjoy a delicious break, as do the castle town of Hückeswagen and the Hanseatic city of Wipperfürth, the route runs entirely on disused railway lines. No car traffic, no traffic lights, only a few intersections, but wide paved paths, hardly any inclines, numerous rest areas, and beautiful views at every turn. The inviting town centers offer a welcome change of pace with their charming market squares, noteworthy churches, and pretty half-timbered and slate houses. In the Oberbergisches Land region, a detour to one of the many reservoirs is well worth considering.

Directions

A very scenic route, mostly on wide, paved cycle paths, from Leverkusen-Opladen via Burscheid, Wermelskirchen, Bergisch Born, Hückeswagen, and Wipperfürth to Marienheide. Signposting: From Leverkusen-Opladen train station, follow the red and white signs for "Panorama-Radweg Balkantrasse" (Panorama Cycle Path Balkantrasse). Shortly before Bergisch Born, turn sharply right onto the "Bergischer Panorama-Radweg" (Bergisch Panorama Cycle Path). Follow the orange and white markings to Marienheide train station.

Further information

The gentle gradients and the low-traffic route along former railway lines make it ideal for families with children. The reverse route from Marienheide towards Leverkusen is particularly suitable, as it descends towards the Rhine.
