Dear families, dear children,

Welcome to my home, the beautiful Bergisches Land. My name is Berta von Berg, the Bergische Cow, and I am delighted to present my home to you. There is certainly lots to see and do in the Bergisches Land.

But let’s learn a thing or two about my home region first. The Bergisches Land, which literally means “Mountain Region”, does not have very high mountains as the name would suggest – it is just quite hilly. It is a very varied region, however, with lots of forests, meadows, lakes and villages. During summer, you will see my black and white Holstein relatives in the many green meadows, enjoying the idyllic peace and quiet and grazing away.

If you've had enough of solid ground, you can also visit one of the many bathing lakes and swim, sail, row or hire a pedal boat, run around or simply relax on the shores. If the water in the lakes is a little too cold for you, you can simply stop off at one of the many swimming pools.

Cyclists and hikers make good use of the woods and country lanes. Six named trails have been designed especially for you children, where you will be accompanied by one of my friends - the popular mouse from TV - who will tell you about lots of different subjects on the information boards.

Did you know that it is not only in the great outdoors that the region’s natural beauty becomes apparent? An excursion to one of the two stalactite caves will allow you to enter a mysterious underground world and admire stalactites and stalagmites.

Even a visit to a museum can be exciting! There are local history, industrial and open-air museums where you can weave baskets, produce felt, make pottery, bake bread, cook delicious Bergisch dishes, learn how people lived without electricity a hundred years ago, make paper and much more.

As you can see, there is a lot to discover in the Bergisches Land! You can find out what else you can do and discover below.

By the way, we also checked to see if there was a playground for you and everything you might need for your little brothers and sisters.

Have fun!

Your Berta
